Automation and Systems Services
Our technical teams design, deploy and maintain a modern, state-of-the-art information technology infrastructure of hardware, software, communications equipment and applications that run the nation's central bank. Working in the multi-platform environment of a world-class institution, our talented Automation staff is involved in web-based design, document imaging, wireless, networking, directory and security technologies, to name a few. Among the critical business areas the Group supports are capital markets, electronic payments, cash processing services, bank supervision and monetary policy.
Bank Supervision
Our uniquely skilled staff supervises and regulates certain financial institutions in the Second District (New York State; northern New Jersey; Fairfield County, Connecticut; Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands). They assess the safety and soundness of banking institutions, evaluate key business and financial risks, risk management practices, review bank proposals for mergers and acquisitions, and monitor compliance with consumer protection laws and regulations. Staff members also analyze issues and trends, and develop domestic and international supervisory policy.
Corporate Group
Providing critical support, the Corporate Group delivers key services to the entire Bank including Human Resources, strategic risk assessment of the Bank's framework, financial management and allocation of resources, and coordination of general account relationships with financial institutions, government agencies and the Treasury.
Emerging Markets and International Affairs
The analytical staff of the Emerging Markets studies macroeconomic, financial and political developments in emerging and newly industrialized economies in order to evaluate key issues and risks. This staff also analyzes capital market developments in emerging economies and broader international financial issues. In addition, members of the staff serve as key liaisons between the New York Fed and foreign central banks, official international agencies and the private financial community.
Financial Services
The Financial Services staff provides vital banking services to the U.S. government, banks and other financial institutions. Among its responsibilities are the circulation and withdrawal of U.S. currency, sale and redemption of U.S. Treasury securities. Staff members also manage the central bank's integral role in two nationwide electronic funds and securities transfer systems.
Markets
The important work of the Markets staff includes implementing the U.S. monetary and exchange rate policy decisions of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) and the U.S. Treasury, respectively. Staff members trade in the markets for U.S. Treasury securities, and foreign currencies and securities. Other responsibilities include providing correspondent banking services to foreign central banks and official international organizations.
Research and Statistics
The Research and Statistics staff engages in advanced economic and financial research that influences central bank policy and operations. Our world-class economists study the performance of financial institutions as well as the health of the financial services industry and national and regional economies. This staff also makes significant contributions to the understanding of domestic and international capital markets; domestic productivity, wages and prices; international macroeconomics, trade and economic development; and the stability and efficiency of payment and settlement systems.
